ABOUT THE COURSE

The European Studies is part of area studies which IR Study Programme UKI is focusing on. European history cannot be undervalued. Understanding Europe gives a bright light towards understanding the whole history of the world. Europe is experiencing revolution and evolution until its present form and its abundance in terms of history, cultural, geography, language, socio-economics and political becomes the attractiveness of the region itself. European study is not only limited to international relations but it covers all aspects and perspectives. As a part of it, EU can be an “entrance” to understand the whole evolution of Europe as an integrated region.

EU has showed its great contribution by coping with the less developed countries during its enlargement process, by underlining democratisation, peace and human rights principles, also by providing inclusive strategy to the minority; although it is difficult. EU keeps the policy that strengthens the European community existence for better life. Thus it is clear that in the international level, the role of EU as a global actor cannot be denied since it is able to maintain its strong identity and principle in the middle of uncertain world.

Learning properly and continuously about Europe/EU will be a challenge for teachers and students in Indonesia in this globalisation era since issues become global and everybody has to involve and become part of the solution. Issues like global warming, renewable energy, energy security, waste management, sustainable development will create strong debate and need a new method of teaching. For these reasons, up-grading and professional improvement through various methods like sharing, exchange experience, dialogue, lecturing with partners of EU states, have become a must.

The developments above have encouraged IR Study Programme UKI to create EIIES Module, which stands for European Integration and Interregionalism of Europe-Southeast Asia. This website is one of the tools specially designed for students to view content and independently participate in the learning process. In addition, other reasons for the EIIES module we develop are because economically regions have become more interdependent and their function of economic life inevitably complements each other. In this context, understanding the comparative advantage of each country and opportunities available for young professionals from Europe and Asia will be one of the aims of the course. Mobilisation of expertise is part of dynamic transnational relations among various actors in our today’s world.
